A Devastating Transformation a Single Year Has Brought in the United States

In late October 2024, the environment was utterly different. Ahead of the American presidential vote, considerate Americans could acknowledge the nation's serious imperfections – its injustices and disparity – but they still could see it as America. A free society. A place where legal governance meant something. A nation guided by a honorable and ethical leader, even with his elderly years and increasing frailty.

These days, as October 2025 ends, numerous citizens scarcely know the land we inhabit. People suspected of being illegal immigrants are rounded up and forced into vehicles, occasionally refused legal rights. The East Wing of the “people’s house” – is being torn down for an obscene event space. Donald Trump is targeting his opponents or alleged foes and requesting federal prosecutors hand over a huge total of citizen dollars. Soldiers with weapons are deployed into American cities with deceptive justifications. The Pentagon, rebranded the Defense Ministry, has – in effect – rid itself of routine media oversight during its expenditure of possibly reaching close to a trillion USD from citizen taxes. Colleges, law firms, journalism organizations are buckling from leader's menaces, and billionaires are handled as members of the royal family.

“The United States, shortly prior to its 250th birthday as the planet's foremost free society, has crossed the limit into authoritarianism and totalitarianism,” a noted author, commented this past summer. “In the end, more quickly than I thought feasible, it did happen here.”

Every morning starts with fresh terrors. It is challenging to understand – and distressing to accept – how deeply lost we are, and the speed at which it has happened.

Nevertheless, we understand that the leader was duly elected. Following his deeply disturbing initial presidency and following the warnings linked to the understanding of the conservative plan – despite the leader directly declared plainly he intended to be a dictator just on day one – enough Americans chose him rather than his Democratic opponent.

Frightening as today's circumstances are, it's more daunting to understand that we’re only several months under this leadership. How will three more years of this decline find us? And what if that timeframe becomes a more extended duration, as there is nobody to stop this leader from determining that a third term is required, perhaps for national security reasons?

Certainly, not everything is hopeless. There are legislative votes the coming year which might create a new governmental control, should Democrats regain one or both houses of parliament. There are public servants who are striving to apply a degree of oversight, for example representatives currently launching an investigation concerning the try to money grab from legal authorities.

And a presidential election in the next cycle could initiate us down the road toward restoration precisely as the prior selection set us on this regrettable path.

There are numerous residents demonstrating in public spaces of their cities, like they performed recently during anti-authority protests.

An ex-cabinet member, wrote recently that “the slumbering force of America is stirring”, similar to past following the Red Scare in that decade or throughout the sixties activism or during the seventies crisis.

In those instances, the listing ship ultimately corrected itself.

The author states he knows the signs of that resurgence and sees it happening currently. As evidence, he cites the recent massive protests, the extensive, cross-party resistance to a television host's removal and the largely united rejection by reporters to agree to government requirements they only publish authorized information.

“The slumbering entity consistently stays inactive before specific greed becomes so noxious, a particular deed so disrespectful of the common good, certain violence so loud, that he is compelled other than to stir.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I value the author's seasoned opinion. Perhaps he will prove to be right.

Meanwhile, the major inquiries endure: is the US able to regain its footing? Can it retrieve its position internationally and its commitment to legal principles?

Or must we acknowledge that the national endeavor succeeded temporarily, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My negative thoughts indicates that the second option is correct; that everything might be gone. My optimistic spirit, however, advises me that we have to attempt, through all methods possible.

For me, as an observer of the press, that means encouraging reporters to commit, more completely, to their duty of overseeing leadership. For some people, it could mean working on political races, or planning demonstrations, or finding ways to safeguard ballot privileges.

Under twelve months back, we existed in a very different place. Twelve months later? Or after another term? The reality is, we cannot predict. All we can do is to strive to persevere.
