Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network launched a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
âThere's this level of irony that we keep returning to,â noted Cappa. âIt's like we have to know weâre the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.â
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
