In a major move for their rebuilding roster, the South Side team have welcomed infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a two-year contract for the high-profile player.
The deal features a $1 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to compensation of $16 million for the 2026 season and $17M for the 2027 year.

The contract also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minors without his approval and allows him to become a free agent at the end of the contract. Additional perks include a dedicated interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.
As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Swallows are also entitled to a supplemental fee of 15% triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese-born to suit up for the White Sox, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.
Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 soon, enters a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a difficult season, finishing last in the American League Central but showing a notable improvement from the previous campaign.
The winner of back-to-back league MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is renowned for a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 HRs, surpassing the longstanding record for a NPB hitter previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.
His most recent NPB campaign was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an side strain. Even with striking out often, he hit .273 with 22 homers and 47 runs batted in.
Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBIs, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Initially playing primarily at first base, he has more recently played to the hot corner.
Murakami's clutch hitting were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending double that brought home Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic 6-5 victory. The following day in the championship game against the Team USA, he hit a tying shot in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 title triumph.
The new White Sox addition is slated to be formally introduced at a press conference on the coming Monday.
