Chornobyl Disaster Containment Structure No Longer Effectively Blocks Radiation, Requires Major Repair – IAEA

A protective shield covering the Chernobyl nuclear reactor in Ukraine can no longer perform its main function of blocking radiation, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This loss of function comes after a drone strike earlier this year that blew a hole in the structure.

Damage from Aerial Attack Compromises Containment System

A drone strike in February caused a breach in the so-called “new safe confinement” arch. This massive shield, built at a cost of €1.5bn with work finishing in 2019, was designed to contain radiation for decades. A recent IAEA assessment mission confirmed that the drone impact had weakened the structural integrity of the steel arch.

The containment arch's main safety functions, such as confinement, are no longer operational, said IAEA director general Rafael Grossi. Grossi noted that the mission confirmed no permanent damage to key support structures or monitoring systems.

Background Context of the Chernobyl Shelter

The initial 1986 explosion at Chornobyl – which occurred when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union – released radioactive fallout over much of Europe. In a hurried containment effort, Soviet engineers constructed a concrete “sarcophagus” over the ruined reactor, but it had a 30-year lifespan. The New Safe Confinement was constructed to enable the eventual dismantling of the old sarcophagus, the destroyed reactor hall, and the molten fuel within.

Present Status and Required Steps

While some repairs have been carried out, the IAEA stressed that comprehensive restoration is absolutely necessary. This is required to prevent further degradation and to guarantee long-term nuclear safety. Officials in Ukraine had stated that a unmanned aircraft carrying a powerful explosive struck the facility, causing a fire and damaging the protective cladding.
