Three members of law enforcement perished and at least 15 people got wounded in an apparently premeditated gas explosion at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the house near Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and another man who fled subsequent to the blast was located shortly later. All three have been transported to the hospital.

The blast could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the location displayed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the past.

Financial Context

The head of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, said the farmhouse was under an eviction order due to debts accumulated by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the residents caused the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno stated to the media.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation directly hit our members,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the site, the Interior Minister stated.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The official was convinced the explosion had happened on a story above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the explosion, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors informed local news, mentioning that the family members had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the three men who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
