Radioactive Seafood Issue: Indonesia Faces Contamination in Major Industrial Area

A significant industrial zone located on the outskirts of Jakarta is dealing with radioactive pollution after a government taskforce detected presence of the hazardous isotope Caesium-137 at twenty-two manufacturing facilities within the area, which includes businesses that export frozen marine products.

Investigation and Discovery of Contamination

Indonesian officials launched an inquiry when the American FDA identified Caesium-137, a nuclear isotope, in a consignment of chilled coated shrimp exported by a local company.

The FDA released an warning advising distributors and sellers to dispose of the product and not sell it, although the detected level was far below the agency's action threshold. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had found would not present an acute risk to consumers.

The authority explained: “The primary impact on health of worry following longer term, repeated low dose exposure (eg through consumption of contaminated food or water over time) is an elevated risk of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells.”

Extensive Contamination and Health Checks

Radioactivity scans showed at least 22 plants in the industrial area were contaminated. The official team did not identify the 21 other manufacturing sites, but confirmed they would immediately receive decontamination processes conducted by the country's nuclear authority.

The environment minister declared that residents living in strongly contaminated areas would be relocated until the location was decontaminated, adding that the well-being of the inhabitants was the “main concern”.

Medical officials additionally conducted examinations on nearby workers and people located close to the industrial estate, identifying 9 people who showed signs for contact to Caesium-137. They were sent to a medical facility before being allowed to return home.
