The Manager Maresca Describes Lead-Up Period as His 'Worst 48 Hours' with the Club

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stated that the run-up to the weekend's victory against Everton represented "the toughest 48 hours" he has experienced with the London club.

The Italian made a puzzling message in his after-game press conference even after notching a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge thanks to finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those three precious points propelled Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four, perhaps improving the atmosphere following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's drought without a win to consecutive outings.

But, when asked about Gusto's assist and overall display, Maresca unexpectedly shared his displeasure over the preceding two days at the club.

"How the players want to improve has been excellent and this is the reason why I applaud them - because with a host of issues, they are excelling after a complicated week," he stated.

"Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the most difficult because several people withheld support from us."

Pressed on what he meant, the former Leicester City manager elaborated: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."

When questioned if he meant people internally at Chelsea, he replied: "In general. Overall," before specifying when queried if it was directed towards supporters or the media: "I adore the fans and we are very happy with the fans."

Fitness and Suspension Crisis

Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's persistent fitness and suspension issues, remarking they had been without key forward Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, as well as being deprived of linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and forward Liam Delap to two significant injuries.

"I truly praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them without Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them without Liam Delap," he explained.

"And this squad, regardless of who is playing, they are performing fantastic. Today was 5 games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer playing, we said many times that he's our finest player but we play the vast majority of the season minus our best player.

"We play 5 games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to appreciate because the effort from the players is fantastic."

Chelsea's triumph over Everton strengthened their position in fourth in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled in the coming days.

Speculation Over Maresca's Remark

It was ambiguous what exactly caused Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the worst of his spell as Chelsea head coach.

In that period, the coach had traveled back with his backroom team and players from Bergamo, conducted a session at the training ground, faced a pre-game news conference where he appeared relaxed, and engineered a win over an in-form Everton side.

It was not obvious whether any specific media reports had irked him, if social media discourse were a factor, or if it was something more significant from inside the club at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca only sought to deny that it was an matter related to the club's supporters, some of whom have not yet fully embrace him since his arrival from Leicester during July 2024.
